Major: BA. Political Science
When I started my undergraduate degree, I originally studied environmental science and later switched to studying public policy as it focused on the how of implementing changes through government and our other societal institutions. For me, studying public policy and/or political science means understanding the intersectionality of policy issues I am interested in. This includes the environment, economy, and equity. It takes a strong grasp of EPPS topics to understand where policies can influence the future generation positively. I believe businesses, government, NGOs and civil society can work together and find where they can benefit and help each other, especially in Texas. My experiences as a climate activist starting in college have blossomed through wonderful experiences with talented people and organizations into a passion for the field of public policy and a desire to learn how to better connect with others to make positive change.
At the end of the day, I know my studies here will be integral to my career goals and I love getting to deep dive into the engaging topics we EPPS students get to focus on every semester. I wouldn’t want to be in any other field of study. Having the mindset that I will be a lifelong learner has helped me put rigorous coursework into perspective and establish college work as a full time job akin to the work life I will have in the future. Taking the time to plan my coursework and career goals while maintaining consistently good study habits brings me confidence as a student and as a leader. Connecting to my wonderful professors, advisors, and friends has made the experience so much more enjoyable. One of my favorite courses this semester is Global Politics with Dr. Peinhardt and I appreciate how great he is at teaching topics like collective action theory.
As an undergraduate EPPS student, I feel a sense of urgency in the time we live to harness my talents and combine it with the talents of other people and organizations with whom I share aligning interests to promote sustainable development on a federal level. In the midst of the dramatic changes we as youth are experiencing in our times — the recent global pandemic, rising inequalities, the climate crisis, increasing poverty, and revolutions in labor and technology, I believe that my generation must be the generation of solutions to address these challenges. While I am not sure yet exactly what direction my career will take me, I have greatly appreciated getting to have very positive experiences as a student and activist that have been a great guide to finding where I would like to apply my talents as a working professional. I envision that my career path will lead me to narrow my focus and combine my experiences, interests, and skills to further my activism through working in the policy field.
I would recommend getting to know your advisors and working through your degree plan as early as possible. It makes planning internships and other life plans around your graduation timeline much easier! I’d also recommend spending your first semester doing at least one activity that builds your confidence and leadership skills related in some way to your field of interest. It helps you discover your passions, shows applicable experience to your field, and is a great resume builder.
