Wicked Problems, Real Solutions: Dallas Sustainability Expert Visits ICL

The Initiative for Civic Leadership (ICL) recently welcomed Oppong Hemeng, Climate Action and Sustainability Program Leader for the City of Dallas, to the Wicked Social Problems class. He discussed how Dallas collects, uses, and communicates data about sustainability, resilience, and economic development. The class learned about the city’s Comprehensive Environmental & Climate Action Plan (CECAP) and the eight goals that guide the department through the policy process. These goals include affordable, sustainable transportation options, green space initiatives, air and water quality, zero waste, and resilient energy efficient buildings. The City of Dallas makes all of its data available online through www.dallasclimateaction.com. Mr. Hemeng presented three city projects: Air Quality Monitoring, Electric Vehicle Charging, and a city-wide Heat Map in which the students were able to see the connection between data and policy outcomes.
