The University of Texas at Dallas proudly hosted the West Point Leadership Conference, a partnership between West Point, UTD Army ROTC, and the School of Economic, Political and Policy Sciences, on November 8th.
This impactful event brought together 155 exceptional students from Mesquite, Garland, Plano, and Fort Worth ISDs, including 69 JROTC members, to explore leadership, ethics, and career opportunities in STEM and military service.
Dr. Denise Boots, Senior Associate Dean of Undergraduate Education, set the tone for the day by welcoming attendees and sharing insights about School of EPPS. Her remarks underscored the university’s commitment to fostering academic and professional growth among young leaders.
The event featured keynote presentations by two distinguished guests. Lieutenant General Steven Gilland, Superintendent of the U.S. Military Academy, engaged with educators and inspired students with his address on leadership and resilience. Later, COL Lee Von Arsdale, West Point Distinguished Graduate, Special Forces Regiment Distinguished Member, shared his expertise in cultivating leadership and ethical decision-making in the civilian and military spheres. Other notable attendees were Mr. Darcy Anderson (Vice Chairman of Hillwood Management and Civilian Aide to the U.S. Secretary of the Army), Dr. Michael Evans (Mayor of the City of Mansfield, TX), Dr. Jerry Cheatom, LTC-R, USA (Texas Boys State Leadership Team Executive Board Member and Director of Army Instructions San Antonio Independent School District)
In addition to the enriching talks, participants connected with 34 cadets from UTD’s Comet Battalion and West Point, engaging in mentorship and team-building activities.
