Event Introduction

In January 2020, the incumbent Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) president Tsai Ing-wen won reelection with a record of over 8 million votes. Her landslide victory could indicate Taiwan voters’ general refusal of Beijing’s “One country, two systems” proposal for unification. More importantly, it could usher in a new era for Taiwan, China and the United States, breaking the equilibrium among the three in maintaining the “ambiguous” relations. The 2020 Taiwan Forum convenes specialists in Taiwan studies to address implications of this important election on US-China-Taiwan relations and invites public dialogue on Taiwan’s new role in the regional order. The forum will be held in the School of Economic, Political and Policy Sciences at The University of Texas at Dallas on Feb. 21, 2020. It provides a platform for researchers and public opinion leaders to exchange views on issues shaping the future of Taiwan and U.S. policy on the Asia Pacific.
