Deciding on Sociology
Ever since I was a young child, I would always question things that were considered common sense. For example, I didn’t believe in the notion that poor people are marginalized because of their own laziness or ineptitude. This strong desire for wanting to know the specific social structures of our society led to me to become a sociology major, as sociologists examine why things are the way they are in a scientific way. Furthermore, I have a great affection for those that are at a disadvantage in our world due to being a minority in several ways myself.
My EPPS Success
My EPPS success is mainly due to the professors! I really like how they genuinely care about your well-being and encourage diverse opinions in the classroom. Furthermore, they are non-biased and take your beliefs seriously in regards to your papers, presentations, and discussions. It’s rare to have a department that cares so much about its students.
Plans for the Future
I am planning to get my Masters in Applied Sociology and eventually work in nonprofit organizations. I especially want to work in organizations that specialize in mental health awareness or poverty assistance.
Advice to Prospective EPPS Students
It’s important to come to class every day. I know this sounds obvious, but it allows you to absorb the information of the reading that was assigned and it allows you to ask your professor any questions that you might have. Also, don’t be afraid to talk to your professors! They’re here to help you every step of the way.
