Deciding on Economics
When I was in middle school, I watched a movie called Freakonomics, based off of a book and podcast of the same name that explores relationships between seemingly unrelated variables. I became interested in economics after watching the movie, reading the books, and listening to the podcasts, which is how I decided to major in economics.
My EPPS Success
For me, the key to success in EPPS, and other parts of life, is determining my priorities and keeping them in check. This allows me to find a healthy balance between school and other parts of my life without neglecting one part or the other. Additionally, I believe it is important to make time to enjoy oneself and find ways to be happy. Working hard is certainly important, but it is easy to burn out if that is all one does.
Plans for the Future
Upon graduating with my Bachelor’s degree, I plan on returning to UT Dallas in Fall 2019 for graduate school, where I will pursue my Master of Science in Economics with a certificate in Economic and Demographic Data Analysis. After obtaining my Master’s degree, I would like to be a data analyst for some branch of the public sector.
Advice to Prospective EPPS Students
EPPS is a great place to study, but it is important to keep in mind that you will only get out of it what you are willing to put into it, academically and socially. It is also important to understand what exactly you may or may not want to study, because the social sciences are not for everyone. For me, I love the quantitative and qualitative aspects of economics, so EPPS was a great experience for me overall.
