EPPS STEM Programs
STEM-Designated Graduate and Undergraduate Programs
The School of Economic, Political and Policy Sciences (EPPS) offers several STEM-designated graduate programs and undergraduate programs. STEM — science, technology, engineering and math — programs keep abreast of emerging science or technology-based advances to address various social challenges, offer students flexible and versatile paths, and open doors to highly compensated in-demand jobs.
What Is STEM Designation?
As science advances and the need for professionals with the skills to solve complex problems rooted in science grows, the U.S. government allows institutions to give a STEM designation to programs that focus on science, technology, engineering and math. This designation is important because the U.S. and global economies increasingly require workers with a high proficiency in these areas.
Though STEM jobs are in high demand, U.S. domestic students have shown a declining interest in the four STEM fields over the years, prompting the government to work with educational institutions to promote STEM programs. Thus, STEM-designated programs offer benefits and career opportunities for all students.
What Are the Benefits of Choosing STEM-Designated Programs?
Career Impacts
STEM fields offer the fastest-growing professional career opportunities. Choosing a career in science, technology, engineering or math offers future job security, flexibility, job satisfaction and outstanding earning potential.
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that STEM occupations will grow 10.5% between 2020 and 2030, compared to a 7.5% growth in non-STEM occupations, with a median annual wage of $89,780 among these STEM jobs. Most of the recent STEM degree graduates from EPPS moved into full-time employment within three months of graduation with the average first-year compensation over $75,000.
U.S. Domestic Students
STEM-designated degrees offer U.S. domestic students the possibility of academic advancement and employment security. Moreover, there are many options, career paths and scholarship opportunities to take advantage of as a U.S. citizen, including the UTD Cyber Security Scholarship Program.
F-1 International Students
Eligible international students may obtain a 24-month OPT (optional practice time) extension to work in the United States.
