Master of Science in Social Data Analytics and Research

Program Description

The Master of Science in Social Data Analytics and Research degree program builds on faculty expertise in criminology, economics, geospatial information sciences, political science, public and nonprofit management, public policy, political economy and sociology to equip students with advanced training that is widely applicable in a variety of fields.

As demand for social data production, collection and analysis increases — driven by government, nonprofit and private sector organizations, as well as doctoral programs and advanced research institutions — students with advanced training and expertise in both quantitative and qualitative methodologies will have the skills and experienced needed to thrive in many different industries.

Objectives

  • Students will learn big data analytic skills and capabilities in practice to sustain public, nonprofit, and private sector organizations as they address pressing societal issues on both local and global scales;
  • Students will work with quantitative and qualitative data discovery, analysis and visualization;
  • Students will use data science and social science methodologies, theories as well as the ethics of data science practice in the areas of public policy and services.

Required Classes

The program has three components: Required Core Courses (15 semester credit hours), Prescribed Analytical Electives (12 semester credit hours) and Prescribed Disciplinary Electives (9 semester credit hours). For detailed course information please visit the Graduate Catalog

Admission Requirements

Although applications will be reviewed holistically, in general, entering students have earned a 3.0 undergraduate grade point average (GPA) (on a 4.0 point scale). An application essay, two letters of recommendation, and official transcripts are also required.

Prerequisites

While there are no specific course prerequisites, entering students will benefit from exposure to undergraduate courses in statistics.

Grading Policy

In order to qualify for graduation, students must maintain a minimum 3.0 grade point average in their degree program’s core courses plus an aggregate grade point average of 3.0 for all graduate courses taken in the student’s degree program at UT Dallas.
